Stewart Gibson Memorial Cup

In 2009 Stuart Gibson passed away after a courageous and stoic fight against gastric cancer. His family raised money following his death and asked that it be used in a way to benefit future patients that find themselves in a similar position to Stuart. Prior to his illness, Stuart was a teacher, if the hundreds of entries on Facebook and letters received by his wife Rita and family are an indication he was clearly both inspirational and transformational in this role. It was therefore felt that a fitting memorial would be to use the money to inaugurate a cup and award to be presented annually to the SpR on the oncology rotation who had conducted and presented the most influential piece of original research, ultimately a very concrete way of ensuring improvements in future patient care. To this end the Stuart Gibson Memorial Cup was commissioned and donated to the Oncology training programme by Mrs Rita Gibson. The inaugural award was presented in May 2010 to Dr Jennifer Forrest for her paper entitled “ Treatment Outcomes for Patients with Advanced Cervical Cancer treated with ‘GOG protocol compatible’ definitive Chemo-Radiotherapy and HDR Brachytherapy”
